Questions

What people ask us, in the order they ask it

If yours is not here, write to us and we will answer it.

Do you find children, or match us with a surrogate or donor?

No. We are a law firm. Agencies, clinics and counselors match people, and we work with whichever you choose. We write and review the agreements and handle the court.

Should we call before we choose an agency or a clinic?

Before is usually better. Their agreements are easier to change before you sign them, and we can tell you which terms are ordinary.

Can we meet without driving to Beverly Hills?

Yes. Most first conversations are by phone or video, and most families meet us in person only for signing or a hearing.

How long does an adoption take?

It depends on the kind of adoption, the home study and the court’s calendar. Stepparent adoptions are often a few months; others take longer. We tell you what each stage waits on.

What if a birth parent changes their mind?

The law of the state decides when and how consent can be withdrawn, and it differs a great deal. It is the first thing we check.

Do we and our carrier need different lawyers?

Yes. Their interests differ at several points. We represent intended parents, or a carrier in a separate matter, never both.

Is a known donor ever a legal parent?

It depends on where the child is born, whether a clinic was involved and what was signed beforehand. We explain which rules apply before you begin.

We are both on the birth certificate. Do we need anything more?

Not every family does. An order is stronger and travels better. If you travel, or might move, many families choose to have one.

What does it cost?

Most work is a flat fee, in a letter, after the first conversation. It states what is included and what is paid to others, such as courts, agencies and clinics.

Do you offer a payment plan?

We can usually spread a flat fee across the stages of the matter. Ask on the first conversation.
