The path

Six steps from a first conversation to certified copies

The names of the steps change from one kind of matter to another. The order does not.

  1. 01

    Step 1: A first conversation

Thirty minutes, by phone, video or in the office. You tell us what you are planning and where you are in it. We say what we would do and in what order.

  2. 02

Step 2: A fee in writing

Within a few days you receive a letter: what the fee is, what it includes and what it does not. Most of our work is a flat fee. If it is not, the letter says how it is counted.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The paper

We read, draft and negotiate: agency and clinic contracts, donor and carrier agreements, petitions and consents. You review each document with a lawyer before you sign it.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The waiting

Home studies, clearances, medical cycles and court calendars each run at their own pace. We tell you what is being waited for and who has it.

  5. 05

Step 5: The hearing or the order

We file, prepare you, and go with you to any hearing. Most are short. Bring whoever you would like in the room.

  6. 06

    Step 6: After the order

We order certified copies, help with the new birth certificate, and send a checklist for the people who will ask for proof: schools, insurers, passport offices.

What a fee covers

Our fee, and the bills that come from elsewhere

Most families are surprised by how many people send an invoice. We list them at the start.
